Recap of Tempt One’s “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” Art Show

?

On December 3, 2016 Maintain Skate Shop which is located at 2645 North Figueroa Street, Los Angeles Califas hosted the “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” Benefit Art Show and Pop Up Shop for legendary Tempt One, K2S, 213, STN Crews.

OG Tempt, no needed introduction on who he is and his contributions to the Los Angeles Graffiti History Movement. His legacy of fresh styles and unique ability of elaborated pieces with crisp colors and sharp lines were way ahead of its time. While many were inspired by East Coast styles and letters, crews such as K2S were paving the way for the West Coast style in Graffiti and OG Tempt marked his legacy from that point on. This is Los Angeles baby! Understanding the amazing creative individual Tempt One is makes this event special because aside to the years and roller-coaster of unfortunate circumstances, there are many of us out here who hold a fond respect and love for Tempt. Tempt, if you are reading this, know that what we do for you is genuine. Maintain Shop was the perfect location to execute the true essence of who Tempt is, showing our support for him not only as a friend, or an artist but also as a Skater, Team Creeps Ese!

Big ups to Los Angeles based Graffiti Art Chingona, muralist and community builder Petal LOD for organizing such a dope event in our city of Angels. Do not hesitate to show her the ultimate respect when you see her because I got to witness the development process, just to give you an insight on how this idea turn into a reality; it is not an easy task. The hard work and dedication Petal, Duce and all of the participating artists invested for their friend Tempt; is inspiring. Much respects to you all!

On this lovely sunny afternoon, Maintain transformed itself into a Tempt, One Stop Shop, limited edition caps, pins, t-shirts, hoodies and most importantly, Art Skate decks by some heavy hitters such as Angst, Key, Defer, Style, Slick, BIG Sleeps, Heaven, Vox, Gas, Petal, Plek, Wizrock, Cache and Cre8.

Before coming thru the venue, got to kick it with my Mala Influencia SIZE OTR and brother from another mother, BESK LODUCA, Tony and Nikky. Never a dull moment with these vatos; cheers homeys! Got to the venue early with my skater kid Frido Dorito and Jayden to help my sister Petal with any last details needed. As I got there, she was already en chinga status making sure everything was on point before the public arrived. Gaso and Search were the first ones there, so of course we put them to work, well Search was smart and took off to do his thing and left Gaso to do all the man labor, thanks brother for hanging decks, climbing ladders and doing anything you were told to do. Ha-ha. As the event progressed, a lot of Tempt’s friends came by to show their support and purchase merchandise. What a treat to hear many childhood stories as well as Graff relived moments. All I can say is, Tempt, you are one crazy vato!. The venue got packed indoors and outdoors, quickly turned into a black book session and slaps trades. Our kidos turned the front of Maintain into a skate drop as the locals kids, Frida and Jayden showed off their skills throughout the event. And you know the night coul not have been completed without the presence of dear friend and photographer Steve Grody, thank you for contributing photos of OG Tempt. DJ Luman had us bumping our heads to his sick sets which Tempt got to see on Facebook Live Stream; thank you for donating your time to make this event more memorable, what up Doll Uno! Los Angeles came out tonight and I was all SMILES to see so many familiar faces happy to be there for the same cause. What up Pesky, Gordo, Allegra, Sonji, Nuke, Anger, Search, Este, and everybody that came out! Do not worry if you could not make this event, many more on the way!

If you missed out on this event, you can still make your contribution by purchasing some of Tempt One’s merchandise. Just click on the link below:

“As a human being; Tempt has set an example of what I strive to be as a friend and he definitely has made me want to be a better person.”  –Style 213

“Tempt is one of the most inspiring and motivating people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being friends with through Facebook. As an artist his work speaks for itself from his styles to his social commentary when he was working on bigtime magazine. As far as his contributions to the graffiti scene in my eyes is his versatility of the letter form how he can go from a simple style piece to a complex wild style. That and how he’s continued to influence generations with his work and his drive.”  -WizRok

Recap of El Velorio 2016!

Q’vole my beautiful Raza of Los Angeles! If you were at Antonio Pelayo’s Productions “El Velorio 2016” at Plaza de La Raza located at 3540 North Mission Rd. Los Angeles, Califas this past Saturday, November 5, 2016, then you are well aware of the tremendous festivity that went down that night. For those of you that missed out on the hottest event in Los Angeles, follow closely to the reventon I am about to show you; should have been there Fam!

This extravagant Day of the Dead inspired fiesta was hosted by stunning Melissa Santos with headline bands such as Metalachi, Mariachi Manchester, DJ Gazoo and Casa de Calacas, Ev Dub, El Carro Fantasma, and many others. It is inspiring to see so many talented individuals as well as the supporting public join together to celebrate our beautiful cultura de Dia de Los Muertos. A big shout out to Antonio Pelayo and Natily Gonzalez, the amazing duo behind every successful event in the past few years; thank you for always welcoming me.

I was actually at El Velorio last year and I must say that this year was the best El Velorio turnout, the energy was immense. Beautiful Catrinas y Catrinos everywhere I turned, really awesome to see how the public went all the way out to dress the part and celebrate the lives of our Loved ones con Mariachi, tequila y baile. This is exactly how this night is supposed to be celebrated; you know how we do it, puro pari! The night started late for me as I had to look around for a pinche parking space, no joke when they say to Uber or Lyft it #estacabron. But I walked in to El Velorio at its strongest force and although it was a bit late, the lines were still forming outside. This night was packed, to walk from one part of the venue to the other was an adventure itself, never a dull moment though with hot ladies and handsome caballeros dressed in full attire for the occasion.

First stop, find Natily to get this party started, as I had just came from another show she helped with Sur le Mur, this woman works hard. Finally made my way to the main stage and hang out with Natily and Melissa Santos, really down to earth lady (thanks for dancing with me) as always, the ultimate experience is backstage with all the performers and artists, as the energy and excitement to be there pretty much vibe off on all of us while they performed. I think the funniest part of the night was not realizing that my Press Pass fell off and so there I was walking thru the event randomly asking people if I can photograph them without being aware that my Press Pass had fallen off hours ago! OMG what were these people thinking? This chola asking to take photos of us, oh well why not!. A big thank you for still letting me do my thing!

After a few tequila shots, I finally worked my way thru the entire venue to snap shots of our gente, arte and vendors. I really enjoyed the Art exhibit, as the grand entrance was welcomed by the breathtaking masterpiece of Johnny Quintana. Great art work display as always could not be any more Brown and Proud of my fellow artists! On the other side of the gallery space was the dance floor hosted by my Chingona Friend Calipso and DJ Sloepoke, pretty dope to be welcomed by my new fond family from Cholos Try, got to boogie on the dance floor to some cumbias with the homey Scar and la Chulada de Mujer Irene Soto. Big ups to Big Tokes and Carlos. I always enjoy hanging out with you all at these events. Make me feel right at home chilling with the homeys; they are the real deal, no fronting. As the night progressed, ended up getting into a desmadre with Scar up on the main stage while Metalachi performed, the crowd was hyped to see him on stage, dancing and drinking and clowning with everybody was the highlight of my time at El Velorio. You all know how I feel about humble, down to Earth celebrities!

The best surprise of the night was to see my Mala Influencia Size OTR and my lady (well, his girlfriend) Blanca! Love you both to the moon and back. The night ended with some bomb tacos from Chicas Catering and I don’t say this much but their tacos al pastor were the best I have ever eaten, I really do not have anything else to argue on that. Thank you for feeding me at the end of a long night. You ladies rock!

Big shout out to all my peepz I got to hang out with tonight, Size OTR and Blanca, Roten SKA, Anuh, Payback, Jackie Boy and his beautiful wife, DJ Sloepoke, Calipso, Pauline, Mike Flores, DJ Gargamel, Isaac Pelayo and Dakota, Yasmin Ferrada, the one that holds my heart Elvira Zamora, CEO of Wardrobe Divas, Estela Hydes, Jose Joker, Jaime and Priscilla. And of course Antonio Pelayo and Natily Gonzalez.

It is always important to always remember where you come from and the people who have blessed you with so many opportunities, and that is the mutual respect that these artists, performers and Antonio express to the public. With that being said, Antonio, (and I speak for the community) Thank you for allowing us to have our own events and our very own art exhibits in our beautiful city of Angels. Please continue to represent our Cultura and Firme Style.

Please check out my Recap Gallery of El Velorio 2016!

Much Love & Respect,

Monica Smiles Tobon

Recap of Spicy Tuna Goes Mod @ KGB Studios

“Spicy Tuna goes Mod” Art show & music event presented by Haven Studios at KGB Los Angeles gallery presented an exquisite photo documentary series of popular band Kotolan by the one and only LA based photographer Joshua Ian. On September 10, 2015, Los Angeles was alive! Aside to the Downtown LA Art Walk, the VIP Reception to Exodus Events, Tatuaje”, I got the chance to hang out at KGB. It was a night filled with not only great photography and live performances but also an enormous energy of passionate individuals; it was such a surreal night to remember but the best part was the presence of our younger generation inspired by these talented artists!

This was one of the largest art shows for Haven’s studios and it featured photo-based works of Joshua Ian along with artwork by Danny Greene, Mr. Black Brain, Emerson Barrett, Geoff Melville, Lekit, Atomik One, Rusty Blades, and Geo. I enjoyed every piece of art and aside to the great works; having the opportunity to greet and mingle with the artists was even more surreal; very humble and passionate individuals. Aside to the art, we got to dance to cumbia and the tunes of Los Angeles based rock-cumbias band Kotolan! Along with legendary Chicano icon Lalo Guerrero, D.J Black Shakespeare and many others brought such great vibes to this venue.

I have attended many events at KGB, aside to the Graffiti shows, or live performances, this event was different and its got a lot to do with the people who filled up the place. From the moment I walked in the venue, I was welcomed with heart warming open arms, every person, artists, musician or community organizer was genuinely happy to be there and support one another. KGB was under another type of magic; a fresh ambient where we all came together to network and feed off of our different accomplishments and taking them as our own. This is an example of what community building is all about, aside to executing successful events, bringing our youth to partake in what goes in our arts community. I had the pleasure to share my story with lovely young ladies this night, about my background, my crazy life moments which led me into believing in myself and pursue a higher education and become successful on what I love best; Art! To be in a place, where you are not being judged, but instead applauded for all hard work and dedication leads to a memorable lesson for these young teenagers. If I can do, so can you and I believe in you!

Great job Haven studios! Thank you for always thinking of you to be a part of your awesome LA Art Nights. I left KGB Studios inspired more than ever knowing we are inspiring the youth to follow our steps, to look up to us as role models. Very humble to be there. Congratulation to Joshua Ian on your great work on documenting Kotolan band. Looking forward to more of your work and projects!

Much Love & Respect,

Monica Smiles Tobon

Recap of La Bulla Art Exhibit & Cultural Event

La Bulla executed such an astounding evening this past Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Plaza de la Raza which is located at 3540 North Mission Road, Lincoln Heights, California. I would like to congratulate the entire team behind this successful event and give thanks for a unique cultural experience for us Chicanos/a. What a great way to represent our traditions in Lucha Libre; the art was exquisite as well as the live entertainment and activities throughout the event.

The tickets sold fast and a lot of my friends were participating artists for this show so it was a must for me to show my support and document once more current events within the arts in our communities. And thanks to Natily Gonzalez for allowing me to come in as Press Staff to cover La Bulla, so I was really excited to partake in press coverage. Much love and respects for this hard working lady as well as Antonio Pelayo.

As I approached the location; the line for admission was wrapped around the building! Insane, it was not even time to open the doors yet. Low-rider cars were at the entrance as you walked in just as if they were welcoming you to Lincoln Heights. As I entered the event, the vendors and entertainment was in full effect; which led me straight to the art gallery. I had to take pictures before it got really packed later on that night. The layout of the exhibit was mind blowing, such a great job on design and layout and all the art was so unique and extraordinary! I was so excited to see so many familiar artists under one roof sharing their art for a good cause. There was art work by Shepherd Fairy, Phowl SKA, Roten, my good friend Defer, Raul Orozco, Raul Frame, Jackie Boy, Ezra One, Germ Izm, George Labrada and so many other great artists on display. I think I must have gone inside several times throughout the night just to take in all that art.

As the night progressed, enjoyed cumbias sabrosas and some ska music as well. La Lucia Libre wrestling was hilarious (in its adult humor content) other than that, they held a good show and kept the crows pumped; which is so important because we all feed off of each others good vibes. Now aside to meeting paths with old friends, Graffiti artists and colleagues; I was on a personal quest to finally meet the mysterious artist and talented make up artist Susie Cue. Now, I have known her for over three years over social media, have even linked in gigs together but I had never met her in person! I kept on asking for her where the area for face painting was at. And when I almost gave up and went back to the gallery; there she was, really cool and humble in person. No worries Susie Cue, we will collaborate on something soon. I also was able to hang out with dear friend Eriberto Oriol and his beautiful wife Angelica as well as Nuke UTI, Wendy Random Chavez, Chee UTI, and the SKA Crew family whom I love so much. Shout out to Jez, Neer, Kause, Dras, Phowl, Roten, Vert and all the lovely ladies that were on the dance floor with me all night.

Anuh was my dancing and partner in crime throughout the entire event. We drank a few Jimador shots of tequila which made it smoother to get on that dance floor like pros. Great times are spent with extraordinary people. And I think this was the best way to end our night, on the dance floor! The DJ Gargamel played some good music, from Old School & Hip Hop to Cumbias and Punta; the characters on the dance floor made it all worthwhile to see.

I must say; it was a “Mas Firme Que Wow” night! Live music, tequila, Lucha Libre and great art; this is a classic Lincoln Heights night. What best way to represent ourselves, our low riders, our Art and being of Mexican decent to those outside our culture. We take pride in who we are and I was glad I was able to be a part of that at La Bulla.

So much Love & Respect,

Monica Smiles Tobon
