Press Release

Please join us for the opening night and artist’s reception for Karlos Marquez | The Other Side of Me

Abstract & Nonobjective Art from a Legend in the Graffiti Game.

FATHOM is please to present the first solo exhibition of abstract paintings from Karlos Marquez.

The Art

Working in a limited color palette of mostly blacks, reds, whites and occasional hits of silver and gold, Karlos Marquez has laid down a powerful rhythm for this, a new direction in his artistic output. These are bold masculine paintings that are in fact based on love and acceptance. As he said recently, “…in these new works I’m saying Fear No Love, I’m also showing that I have many sides to my work, that I’m attracted to many styles of expression.”

His inspirations for this new series range from his early teenage influence, the pioneering abstract painter Matsumi Kanemitsu, and later, the black and white work of Franz Kline. Both of those styles have been further informed by Marquez’s deep roots in the Los Angeles graffiti scene. Viewing the paintings you can feel the influence of the mid-century abstract expressionists but there is a sharpness and intensity to the work that is clearly of this time and in some ways unique to this city, Los Angeles.

The Artist:

Karlos “BUMPS” Marquez (American, 1968) born Carlos Ramon Marquez in Honduras and raised in the Pico-Union Central Area of Los Angeles. Writing under the name “Kartoon”, Marquez entered the local graffiti scene in 1983 and in 1985 became one of the founding members of the legendary K2S graffiti crew. Further developing his technique, Karlos studied art at Los Angeles City College in Sherman Oaks where he studied life drawing under Mark Westermoe. In the past 5 years his art has evolved and encompasses a broad range of mixed media pieces including large canvas works and fabric, furniture and metal pieces for CISCO Home. Marquez regularly gives back to the community by contributing to projects with Tempt One ALS foundation, Refoundary Project, the META Foundation and The Ron Finley Project.

VISION: Paintings by Isaac Pelayo

What’s up Los Angeles! Isaac Pelayo presents Vision: Paintings by Isaac Pelayo, Opening Reception on June 2, 2018 located at 1108 South Los Angeles Street, Unit 101, Los Angeles, California. From 7:00pm to 11:00pm. Hosted by Antonio Pelayo Productions.

Artist Statement: This current body of work explores the inspiration of the great minds that came before me. Visionaries, artists, culture producers, entertainers, and grandiosos alike; those individuals whose enlightened contributions to history inspire and inform my creative practice today.

Like them, I too seek enlightenment; spiritual, intellectual, and most of all within my creations. Thus I have begun a visual exploration of the occult power, and wisdom granted by the ever-present awareness reached by a meta-physical knowledge contained in the theory of the third eye.

In an homage to those who influence me, such as Frida Kahlo, Walt Disney, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Biggie, Einstein, and Basquiat, I too yearn to engulf myself with the wisdom and serenity afforded to me within the mastery of my own craft.

This body of work is allowing me to pursue and explore a psychological and spiritual realm within my own work that manifests itself through my paintings. Thus the extracts of my own interrogations are presented representationally, and serve to bring awareness to the deep significance I bestow on the level of consciousness I pursue while creating.

Please join us for a night filled with art, passion and homage to some of the greatest influences of Isaac Pelayo.

About the Artist: Isaac Pelayo (Los Angeles, b. 1996) currently lives and works in Los Angeles, Ca.

Isaac Pelayo’s hyperrealistic aesthetic expressions are a mixture of classical painting, enlightenment, and pop culture. Inspired just as much by Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Velasquez, and Dali, as by The Renaissance, Baroque period, Chicano Contemporary Culture, and Street Art Movement. As a young child, Pelayo found friendship with graphite and paper, son of renown fine artist Antonio Pelayo Jr. who early on exposed him to the Arts. At the age of eleven, Pelayo exhibited his work for the first time and won a 1st place award at an Art Contest that led him on an artistically curious path.

Today, only a decade later at twenty-one years old he works at the Ink and Paint Department for Disney alongside his father. His artwork has graced multiple publications such as Brooklyn and Boyle, Frank 151, Out of Step Books, and was recently on the cover of the Latino Heritage Month Calendar and Cultural Guide, published by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles.

As of today, Pelayo’s artwork has been exhibited at various museums around the globe, such as the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, and The Trotsky Museum in Mexico City. As well as renown galleries, such as Plaza De La Raza, Known Gallery, and The Seventh Letter Gallery, amongst many others.

Official Press Release:

“Two Well-Known LA Graffiti Artisits Collaborate In An Unexpected Synthesis”

CACHE and AISEborn (ArtIsSelfExpression) have painted murals all over the city. Although the two differ more than stylistically, their collaboration reveals a commonality that goes beyond the human barriers and into the realms of spirit.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, December 9, 2017 6pm – 10pm

The artists known as Cache and AiseBorn will show a series of collaborative works in a show aptly titled, Synthesis. Cache’s playful and colorful chicken murals can be spotted on nearly every street corner around the city, while AiseBorn’s massive and impressive mandalas reside in the streets as well as museums.

At first glance, no one would guess two artists would find a common ground artistically. Cache’s cartoon-like characters come in bright, geometric, playful forms, while AiseBorn works with intricate brush strokes and realistic imagery. It was an unexpected yet organically natural union when these two found themselves sharing a mural space after an introduction by their mutual friend, another well-known graffiti artist, Atlas.
“When we come together, we influence each other in unexpected ways. AiseBorn’s work pushes me to flex my other styles; playing with futuristic linear forms and light and shadows.”, says Cache

The show will take place at TONALLI STUDIO in East Los Angeles or “Old Town Maravilla”, a gallery space owned and operated by long time residents and artists, Ofelia Esparza and her daughter Rosanna Esparza Ahrens. Cache and AiseBorn were drawn to the space because of its focus on wellness and community. For the first time, the two artist collaborative works will come together in a new formation on gallery walls. Synthesis will be on exhibit until January 6, 2018.

Rest in Paint SERCH UTI STP RTDK RTH

RIP OG SERCH UTI, STP, RTDK, RTH

On Saturday, November 11, 2017 between 12am-7am. Our brother Eric Serch Ginsburg passed away in his sleep. As many of us knew he was epileptic since childhood; it is probable he had a massive seizure during his sleep.-UTI Crew. I pray his exit was painless and he is resting now for he was taken away too soon, leaving behind his son, brother, mother and the entire Los Angeles Graffiti Movement, his crews and hundreds of friends and fans of Serch All City King! It is difficult to sit here and write about a great friend, a genuine person that always found a way to make you crack up; even in the most unexpected places and moments, you had to have a special kind of humor to be able to hang with Serch. He was blunt, straight to the point, our boy had no filter but yet respectful, always kind to our children and families; he was loved and welcomed everywhere! Never too busy to hit your books, hook you up with his King Slaps; or bust a flow right on sight. It is hard to find OG’s keeping it 100% 24/7. This harsh reality has placed a financial necessity on his family and close friends, with the deepest sincerity I ask of you to please assist monetarily or any other way on this time of need.

Ancient Civilizations, Art & Music Festival

What’s Up San Anto, it was great visiting this cultural enriched and heart warming city! Graffiti Heaven, industrial landscapes, train tracks and mobbed carts, just some of the surroundings I explored at the Paint Yard while checking out the Ancient Civilizations; Art & Music Festival. The Paint Yard opened its doors in conjunction with Pop Up Texus; an Art market for all the masses with various taste in art, music and fashion. It was a sunny day and as for us being from California, we are not used to this heat but we still managed to mingle with firme people with the same passion for Art & Community. You all did a great job, looking forward to more events in the near future. Until then, Stay Up from Los Angeles to San Antonio.

Much love & respect,

Monica Smiles Tobon
