Rest In Beats: LEGENDARY DJ.GARGAMEL

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Los Angeles DJ community lost a beloved brother, creative force, and musical visionary. Thomas Gene Mayfield III, known across turntables, parties, and studio sessions as DJ Gargamel, passed away at the age of 44. His presence was larger than life — and his impact on music, community, and culture will be felt for years to come.

Gargamel’s journey into music began in the early 1990s, during his time working at a record store in California. What started as a job soon became a calling. Surrounded by vinyl and fueled by curiosity, Thomas soaked in every beat, every groove, and every lesson from the DJ mentors who crossed his path. He emerged from that scene with a unique style — one that fused the art of Hip Hop and scratch DJing with the soul of party-rocking club sets.

His musical influences read like a Hall of Fame: DJ Aladdin, Grandmaster Flash, Mix Master Tony G, QBert, Roc Raida, and producers like Dr. Dre, Juan Atkins, Uncle Jamm’s Army, and Masters At Work. But what made Gargamel truly special was the way he blended those sounds into something undeniably his own. You could always feel it when he touched the decks — the turntable wasn’t just an instrument to him, it was an extension of his spirit.

With flawless precision and a deep sense of rhythm, DJ Gargamel brought people together on dance floors across LA and beyond. His sets were a journey, his scratches were storytelling, and his transitions were nothing short of magic. But he wasn’t just a DJ — he was a musician, a producer, and a creative soul whose original compositions reflected not only his talent but his heart.

To those who knew him personally, Thomas was more than just a performer. He was a mentor, a collaborator, a friend, and a beacon of positive energy in the scene. Whether you met him behind the decks, in the studio, or just vibing out at a local event, his authenticity and passion always shined through. Anytime spent with him was special, he was always genuine, loyal, and always carried himself with the upmost respect!

His legacy lives on in the countless lives he inspired, the music he created, and the community he helped build. The loss hits hard — but the love, the sound, and the memories are louder.

So today, we honor a true Los Angeles original.

Rest in Power, DJ Gargamel.

Yours Truly,

Monica Smiles Tobon
